
They watched the other team limp off the stage, disgraced and disqualified, their shame weighing down the whole stadium. The girls would need their performance to go LIVE-WIRE to lift up the spirits of every disenchanted judge. The audience, in contrast, murmured among themselves, drama during nationals always more than enough to keep them entertained. Last year, the Rhode Island Cardinals’ secret pregnancy had kept the audience busy through an unexpected power outage. It was insane. Now, they’d be waiting for them to fail too, somehow. So they couldn’t.
Still, Betty’s mind was also on the recently unveiled scandal. Her eyes narrowed as they landed on Cheryl. The redhead’s skirt was perfectly pleated, her hair falling in luscious waves down her back. None of that was out of the ordinary. Neither was the pleased SMIRK on her lips.
Betty groaned, slapping a hand to her forehead. “ You told the judges about the Cougars, didn’t you? ” She wasn’t exactly appalled; they’d deserved to be disqualified for cheating, but Cheryl could have at least told Betty or Veronica, or SOMEONE. “ Why do you always do this? Go rogue like that? Next time we’ll back you up if you tell us. They could have turned it back on you, Cheryl. ”
Betty’s concern was palpable. She didn’t need to be best friends with Cheryl to care about her. Besides, she was their team captain. What would they do without her?
