It feels like the entire town’s gone silent, if only to hear Betty’s response to this LOADED question. It’s only potentially problematic because what she has to say may not be what he wants to hear, but she’s not going to LIE and pretend he never crosses her mind anymore. “ Sometimes, ” she nods –– or well, tries to, lying down, hardly even worrying about whatever double chin situation might be going on. “ But just as a friend. Like, I’ll see his light on and be annoyed because he said he’s going to sleep… or, I’ll just wonder if he did that essay for English class. Things like that. ”
Reggie’s expression was inscrutable, and no matter how Betty held on to her breath, she couldn’t figure out if she’d said the wrong thing.
She pressed on, “ I don’t think about him the way I think about you anymore. ” This, she could tell, was the right way to go. Appealing to Reggie’s sense of EGO. But only ever by telling the truth. “ When I’m thinking about you, it happens more frequently. Like… ” She colors, the shade of peonies in moonlight. “ It’s like I can’t keep you off my mind. I’ll be putting on makeup, and I’ll remember when you said you liked my lipgloss. I’ll be making coffee and remember our last date. I’ll keep checking my phone for a text from you, and I’ll be disappointed if there isn’t one. ” She hurried to add, “ not that you have to text me all the time. You don’t. I’m just saying. It’s different… ya’ get it? It’s just DIFFERENT now. But I wouldn’t change it for anything. Trust me. ”
