    “     YA  KNOW,     i  never  thought  i’d  find  another  girl  who  liked  doing  this,    ”     she  admitted,  looking  over  the  engine  of  her  1971  chevrolet  c10  cheyenne  pickup.     as  much  as  she  loved  the  old  thing,  it  needed  constant  work  and  with  her  dad  out  of  town,  she  was  happy  that  she  could  ask  betty  to  help  her.     none  of  the  other  girls  knew  how  to  change  the  oil  in  their  own  cars,  let  alone  help  her  fix  the  issue  with  her  engine.     she  would  have  called  mike  but  she  didn’t  know  if  she  could  handle  more  of  his  whining  about  his  relationship  with  emily.     betty  was  someone  she  could  talk  to,  someone  who  knew  what  she  was  doing  and  she  was  just  a  nice  person  who  was  always  there  when  you  needed  her.

    “     it  makes  me  feel  less  alone  that  my  dad  taught  me.     plus  it  helps  me  feel  less     WEIRD     too  because  jess  always  said  i’m  weird  that  i  like  to  fix  cars.     yet  i’m  always  the  first  person  she  calls  to  fix  hers  when  it  breaks,    ”

          If she wasn’t alone, it was usually one of the boys trapped in the garage with Betty. Her best friend could never stand the FUMES for too long, and her dad’s bad back hasn’t had him huddled over an engine in a long time. Sam has been the post pleasant surprise of the whole month!; dare she say year? SHE DARES! “ Gosh, tell me about it. I get mixed reactions all the times. Girls either think I’m WEIRD or that I’m pretending to like cars so I can get guys, which is the DUMBEST thing ever. ” She reached up to tighten that ponytail, grease smudging the edge of her ear, like a strange ELFISH marking. “ With guys they either think it’s hot or underestimate me, when I could probably make sure their engine never works again in the same time it takes for them to give me a lecture on the difference between a car and a truck. ” To say it annoyed her would be… merciful. 

“ It’s frustrating because I just… don’t get the big deal. Some people like making clothes or reading… I like fixing cars. I don’t have to tell you; you get it. ” She smiled ruefully, leaning against the open hood. Sam really did GET IT. Who’d have guessed? Two blondes who loved grease and had more going on inside their heads than the cliche told? WILD! “ Maybe we should open up our own garage. No one will question us when we’re rolling around in hard-earned money. ”
