She isn’t.SHE ISN’T!
Okay. Maybe Betty is. Maybe, hypothetically, there might be a tinge of jealousy swimming through her blood. Maybe she can’t help but NOTICE the eager way eyes track Reggie’s movements –– and why wouldn’t they? He’s attractive; but he’s also her friend and so she has to be completely and utterly blind to that. She should be.
So why isn’t she?
It all started when they’d gone to the beach together. Alone. No Archie, no Ronnie. Just them. Hot summer day, a picnic and a good time was what was promised. Instead, she got three hours of Reggie shirtless. Water dripping off every cut edges of his chest. But that wasn’t even the worst part; no, then he decided it’d be FUNNY to make her squeal like the little piggy that cried all the way home.
The jerk tackled her, tickling until she relented. There was skin touching. A lot of it, too. Everywhere his hands and his fingers touched her was like fire crawling up her body. He’d been so close to Betty she could see the spot he’d missed with sunblock, close enough to see where its redness flared, close enough to nearly pass out with it all. She blamed it on HEATSTROKE, but honestly it wasn’t that hot.
He was.
Since then, she couldn’t stop noticing these little things about him. She wasn’t the only one, either.
It had never bothered her before. Betty wasn’t STUPID; she knew what this meant, but she refused to acknowledge it. She’d had crushes before. Just never one on him. Not since she was seven years old, anyway.
Locking her eyes on his, Betty swallowed, then feigned a carefree smile. She adjusted the cap on her head, glad for the shadow of safety it cast. “ Nope. Why would I be jealous? ” Then, because she had little to no control over herself… “ Do you WANT me to be, Mantle? ”
