Pop’s diner is a treasure trove of memories for the inhabitants of Riverdale. Birthdays and graduations and first date anniversaries celebrated between the red-vinyl seats, and under pastel fluorescent lighting, authenticity in every bite. Pop Tate himself had been running the joint since 1953, and his exact age was murky business to Riverdale High’s teens ––– not that it mattered. Like Jughead always said: “as long as he grills burgers like an angel, who cares how old he is?” Wise, that Jughead.

That all being said, Pop’s was a staple of Riverdale, sure, but it was also in constant need of protection from the Lodges of the world, the head of which was Betty herself. Preserving the roots of Riverdale had always been a cause in her belt, and she told as much to her new friend Rachel as they waited for their order to arrive.

I can’t wait for you to try this, Betty said, eagerly, her ponytail whipping around cartoonishly as she searched for the dish between the crowded diner.  It’s the best thing about Pop’s, honestly: you just don’t get this level of care in the food if it were some lame Americana Magic, and that’s something you can’t get anywhere else.

The statement was punctuated by the heavy clink of the plate between them, a chocolate mud pie with oodles of whipped cream on to becoming the centrepiece to a makeshift date.  Intimidating, huh? I normally would ease you in with my favorite maltshake, but… the look on your face right now? So WORTH IT. ”
