She huffed and she puffed and… she coughed the whole house down. Downstairs in the kitchen, Alice Cooper heard her baby girl hacking and stirred lunch’s soup faster. In the bathroom, her father listened and made a note to pick up some medicine after work. And into her bedroom Chic walked, a steaming cup of something special held in-between his hands.
Betty sat up as he came in, wads of used tissues splayed across her winter quilt; the very same one their Mee-Maw had made for her. She made one for each sibling come Christmas time. Betty had a whole armoire full of them in the attic, rows and rows of soft fabric stitched together with love. She’d be taking her favorite with her to college when the time came, though it was questionable she’d be going anywhere anytime soon, considering the shiversome state she was in.
“ You’re such a good brother, ” Betty said tearily, holding the tea under her chin and letting it ghost across her face lovingly. The scent caressed her skin and lingered, fennel and honey and a HINT of jasmine: straight out of the mix she kept in a jar above the cookies in the cupboard. She took a sip, and her swollen throat relaxed. She sniffed, clearing her nose. “ Thank you so much, Chic… I’d ask you to stay to finish Babe, but I don’t want to get you all sick and gross like me. ”
